This terms Caritas Curriculum Learning - BEING HUMAN

Our Caritas Theme is Happiness Is... Knowing Our Differences and Our Rights and Responsibilities

This term’s topic is ‘Being Human’.  Throughout this topic we will be exploring the differences of all of us and considering the rights and responsibilities that we all have.

In the first half of term, we will be looking at the circulatory system.  Through our hook with a book, ‘Pig Heart Boy’, we will also look at what happens when our circulatory system breaks down and the lengths that we will go to to have a normal life back. The children will be looking at the different parts of the circulatory system and will be able to name the structures of the heart as well as knowing the functions of the veins and arteries, how we need a balanced diet in order to maintain a healthy lifestyle and other factors that can contribute to having a healthy lifestyle.

In the second half of term we will be looking at Local History of Harlow and linking this to rights and responsibilities that we have within our community. In our learning, we will look at how Harlow has changed since WW2 and at some of ‘Harlow’s Firsts’.  We will look at local council and how they work with the local MP.  We will be looking at this through the book ‘The Accidental Prime Minister’, where a school boy is thrust into the limelight as the top job is handed to him through less than democratic means!!  This will all link with our Caritas theme of Right and Responsibilities.

We will also be exploring the life and works of Henry Moore and his work which focussed on body forms. These all differ greatly but can all represent the human form in some context.

P.E.

Our P.E. lessons will be every Tuesday and Thursday.

Please ensure your child has the correct St. Luke's PE kit.  We will still be doing outdoor PE when the weather turns cold, so navy joggers and sweatshirt will be required.

NO JEWELLERY is to be worn for any PE lessons; this includes earrings, bracelets, necklaces and watches.

Other Information

Reading

Please ensure that your child reads daily.  They should be reading a variety of fiction and non-fiction books.  It is important that they read to an adult/older sibling as often as possible.  Please ask your child questions about what they have read and encourage them to give opinions about the book.  Reading diaries must be signed by an adult each time they read at home.

Water Bottles

Your child must bring in a water bottle each day.  Our water fountains are currently switched off, so water bottles from home are essential.  They will bring these home each day.

Home Learning

Home Learning will be given each Wednesday, and is due in the following Tuesday,  Each week, your child will be expected to complete a Topic activity (found on the menu inside their Home Learning book and on their Teams account).  Children will also have weekly spellings to learn, plus an maths Active Learn activity (if your child is having difficulty accessing their Active Learn account then a paper copy will be sent home).

Please support your child with any Home Learning, getting them into the routine of complete all activities each week.  This is great preparation for secondary school.

 Birthdays

Please be reminded that children are not to bring in party bags or sweets.  Instead, we ask that a book is donated to our school/class library.
